Standing at 300 North Mesa Avenue, the historic Hotel Cortez opened on September 10, 1926. Designed by renowned architect Henry C. Trost, this magnificent Spanish Colonial Revival landmark became one of El Paso's most prestigious hotels.
Originally known as the Hotel Orndorff, the building later became the Hotel Hussman before adopting the name Hotel Cortez in 1935.
On June 5, 1963, President John F. Kennedy visited El Paso, adding another remarkable chapter to the hotel's history.
But behind its ornate architecture, carved conquistador figures, and once-grand corridors, darker stories have endured.
The Phantom Bellhop: Local legends describe a mysterious hotel employee who still wanders the hallways, seemingly attending to guests who checked out decades ago.
The Eighth Floor: Paranormal accounts describe unexplained temperature changes and the apparition of a young girl dressed in period clothing.
The Lingering Shadows: Stories of unusual encounters and unexplained presences continue to surround this historic downtown landmark.
The hotel closed in 1970, survived a fire in 1972, and was eventually converted into offices. Yet its distinctive architecture and haunting folklore remain part of El Paso's history.
