Rising above downtown El Paso at 303 Texas Avenue, the O.T. Bassett Tower has watched over the Sun City since 1930. But behind its magnificent Art Deco exterior lies a history filled with architectural mysteries, forgotten spaces, and stories of unexplained encounters.
Commissioned by Charles N. Bassett in honor of his father, Oscar T. Bassett, and designed by the renowned architectural firm Trost & Trost, the tower briefly held the distinction of being El Paso's tallest building.
Its striking architecture combines Art Deco geometry with Mayan Revival influences, ornamental stone faces, and sculpted eagles overlooking the city.
Beneath the building lies one of its most intriguing secrets: a historic subterranean Turkish-style swimming pool, a remarkable feature hidden below the streets of downtown El Paso.
And then there are the stories told after dark.
The Phantom Businessman: Local accounts describe a mysterious figure dressed in vintage business attire wandering the building's corridors.
The Ghostly Typewriters: Reports tell of typewriters clicking away in empty rooms, as though the building's former occupants are still working long after closing time.
The Unexplained Elevators: Stories describe elevators moving independently to vacant floors, with no visible passengers.
The Shadows Above: Witnesses have reported unexplained figures and strange activity on the tower's upper levels.
Today, this historic landmark lives on as a boutique hotel, but its architecture and enduring folklore continue to inspire curiosity.
