EL PASO GHOST TOURS | 1881 FRONTIER COLLECTION

He came through the door. Ben was waiting.

Before El Paso became the Sun City, its dusty streets were home to outlaws, gunfighters, saloons, and men who settled their disagreements with gunpowder rather than words.

Welcome to The Last Round at Dowell's Saloon, inspired by a deadly confrontation from El Paso's wild frontier days.

THE MAN BEHIND THE BAR

Benjamin "Uncle Ben" Dowell was no ordinary saloonkeeper. A businessman, frontier lawman, and El Paso's first mayor, Dowell helped shape the settlement during some of its most turbulent years.

Around 1855, Dowell became embroiled in a deadly dispute with a man named Blair McElroy, who was suspected of stealing from the customs house and taking one of Dowell's horses.

According to historical accounts, Dowell received a warning that McElroy intended to kill him.

THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

When McElroy arrived at Dowell's saloon, the situation erupted into gunfire.

Historical retellings describe Dowell firing a shotgun as McElroy came through the doorway, ending the confrontation in a deadly exchange that became part of El Paso's frontier history.

ONE SALOON. TWO MEN. A MOMENT THAT ECHOED THROUGH HISTORY.

Long before the famous 1881 gunfight involving Marshal Dallas Stoudenmire, El Paso had already earned a reputation as a place where danger could be waiting just beyond the swinging doors.
