Opened in 1930, the magnificent Plaza Theatre at 125 W. Mills Avenue became one of El Paso's most celebrated entertainment landmarks, famous for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, atmospheric interior, and unforgettable movie premieres.
In 1953, the theatre hosted two major Hollywood events. Richard Widmark and Karl Malden starred in Take the High Ground!, which premiered in September. Just two months later, legendary Western actor John Wayne arrived in El Paso for the November world premiere of Hondo.
But Hollywood glamour is only part of the Plaza's story.
Over the decades, the theatre has accumulated an extraordinary collection of paranormal legends.
The Smoking Man: A mysterious figure reportedly seen in the balcony, sometimes preceded by the smell of cigarette smoke or the glow of a burning cigarette.
The Little Girl: Stories describe unexplained giggling, footsteps, and the sound of a bouncing ball echoing through the historic theatre.
The Shadows: Visitors and former employees have reported shadowy figures, unusual lights, and unexplained disturbances within the building.
