EL PASO GHOST TOURS | AFTER DARK COLLECTION 2026–2027

A century of commerce. A forgotten Chinatown. And echoes beneath the streets of El Paso.

Discover the darker side of downtown El Paso with the S.H. Kress Building edition of our After Dark collection.

Standing at 100 Mills Avenue, the historic Kress Building opened in 1937, replacing an earlier chapter of downtown history with one of the city's most distinctive architectural landmarks.

Designed by renowned architect Edward F. Sibbert, the building combines Art Deco elegance with Spanish, Moorish, Mayan, and Southwestern influences. Its ornate terra-cotta exterior, colorful tilework, and distinctive bell carillon made it an unforgettable part of El Paso's downtown landscape.

But the story of this location began long before the Kress name appeared above its doors.

The Forgotten Chinatown: The surrounding Oregon Street corridor was once the heart of El Paso's historic Chinese community, whose businesses and residents helped shape the city's early development.

The Five-and-Dime Legacy: S.H. Kress & Co. first arrived in El Paso in 1907. After decades of serving generations of shoppers, the Mills Avenue location closed in 1997.

The Underground Passage: The restored property includes an underground connection to the neighboring Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park, recalling the hidden spaces and architectural layers beneath downtown El Paso.

The Stories After Dark: Local paranormal folklore associates the surrounding historic district with unexplained footsteps, shadowy encounters, and echoes of a city that has continually rebuilt itself.

Following years of vacancy, the landmark has undergone a major restoration, bringing new life to its historic architecture.

This exclusive After Dark design combines imagery of the actual S.H. Kress Building with vintage architectural details, distressed textures, and eerie atmospheric artwork inspired by downtown El Paso's history.
